The Untouchables, a Huntington Beach Girls Softball under-8 Division
girls’ All-Star team captured first place at the 2002 Sea Breeze
Tournament.
The event took place last weekend in Carlsbad.
The Untouchables wrapped up the title on Sunday with a 4-0 blanking of
Laguna Niguel.
They won all four of their tournament games and twice routed the host
team, Carlsbad, by 10-0 and 14-0 scores. They also romped past last
year’s tournament champion, Rancho Bernardo, 12-3.
In the championship game, the Untouchables broke open a scoreless
pitchers’ duel in the fifth inning by scoring all four of their runs.
The inning began with a leadoff base hit by Sarah Wilkinson, followed
by back-to-back walks to Joelle Erickson and Jamie Sullivan. Heather
LaPier then drove home the first run on a ground out and the second run
scored on a throwing error.
With runners stationed at second and third base, Logan Springer’s
perfectly executed bunt brought home both runners for a 4-0 lead.
LaPier capped a strong tournament performance by the Untouchables’
pitching staff with a 15 strikeout, two hit effort in the final.
Tournament offensive highlights came in the form of clutch hitting
from Ariana Jones, Kathryn Hermann, Ashlynn Pooler and Miranda Tamayo.
The Untouchables will begin their quest for back-to-back tournament
titles this weekend in West Garden Grove.
