The beginning of a heroic summer is shaping up at The Festival of Arts
and Pageant of the Masters.
But, as usual, the air around the festival grounds is full of simple,
human excitement.
“It’s the first time I’m in the show and I am really excited and the
first time I have felt comfortable enough with my work to do a show like
this,” said Tim Shockley, who was among the artists attending a preview
night held Monday.
Approaching the grounds, it’s impossible to miss the design of the
facade, artfully done by the pageant in a collaborative team effort. It
is reminiscent of times past with regards to the Heroes and Heroines,
which is this year’s Pageant theme.
It’s a theme that brings to life immortals through time long past
until the present. It reflects on the past and present independent
spirits who faithfully followed their dreams.
The preview evening started with a peek at The Festival of Arts with
four artists: Patrick Kelly, Mia Moore, Kate Riegler and festival
newcomer Shockley representing the festival’s artists who will be
exhibiting their work.
In all, 150 artists working in a variety of media will be showcasing
their work during the summer-long festival.
Among the pieces of art the Pageant will bring to life is the famous
statue of Athena -- being portrayed by five-year volunteer Kim Hibler.
“It’s a great diversion,” Hibler said of being in the show. “Everyone
in my family is also participating.”
After the first opening week, pageant officials project that it will
be a sell out for the season.
“I heartily encourage Laguna residents to see the show and how much it
has changed in the last five years; it’s changed a lot,” said show
director Diane Challis Davy. “It is important to improve the show and
make it better with the gradual opportunity to add to it.”
Heroes and Heroines will run from July 7 to Aug. 30, staged nightly at
8:30 p.m. with ticket prices ranging from $15 to $65. The price includes
admission to the Festival of Arts.
The pageant and the festival are located at 650 Laguna Canyon Road.
