Adpotion Guild tennis: UCI’s Morton advances

Brian Morton, a Corona del Mar High product who just completed his
freshman year at UC Irvine, was among those who earned quarterfinal
victories Monday in the 41st annual Adoption Guild Tennis Tournament.
Morton and partner Jon Endrikat from Medford, Ore. defeated Kelly
Gullett (Whittier) and John Letts (Rolling Hills), 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, at the
Newport Beach Tennis Club, to advance to Saturday’s men’s open doubles
semifinals.
Costa Mesa resident Julie Shapiro and her partner, Jennifer Lyons from
Dana Point, earned a 6-3, 6-1 women’s open doubles quarterfinal triumph
over Christy and Katy Popstra from Flagstaff, Ariz. Monday at NBTC.
The top-seeded tandem of Debbie Graham, from Newport Beach, and CdM
senior Brittany Reitz received byes into Saturday’s women’s open doubles
semifinals.
Other locals advancing to the semifinals include: Newport Beach’s
Peter Davidson (men’s 35-and-older men’s doubles); Newport’s Paul Cross
(men’s 6.0 doubles); Newport’s Paul King (men’s 5.5 doubles); Newport
residents and partners Ken Stuart and Larry Collins, as well as Costa
Mesa’s Randy Myers (men’s 5.0 doubles); Newport’s Lawrence Van Pelt
(men’s 3.5 doubles); Newport’s Kathy Bennett Doss, as well as Newport
resident Erin Hendricks and teammate Natalie Hill from Costa Mesa
(women’s 5.5 doubles); Balboa residents and partners Kathryn D’Eliscu and
Christine Shively (women’s 4.5 doubles); Reitz, as well as Corona del Mar
resident Orestes Baez, teamed with a separate partner (mixed 6.0
doubles); CdM’s Gail Glasgow and the Costa Mesa pairing of Chris Hastings
and Hill (mixed 5.5 doubles); Costa Mesa’s Kerry Flaherty (mixed 4.5
doubles); and Newport Coast resident Lisa Henkins (mixed 4.0 doubles).
