Prep softball: Costa Mesa still alive with 4-2 win over Laguna

LAGUNA BEACH - The Costa Mesa softball team moved into a tie for
second place in the Pacific Coast League with Corona del Mar, after the
Mustangs defeated Laguna Beach, 4-2, in their final Pacific Coast League
game Wednesday.
Mesa senior starter Tess Lindsay picked up her 17th win to go with
nine losses, as the Mustangs improved to 17-9, 7-3 in the Pacific Coast
League.
The Mustangs scored three runs in the third inning. Junior center
fielder Jade Moss started things off with a single, but she was thrown
out trying to steal. Junior Ann Marie Topps, who also doubled in the
game, singled as did Lauren DeMello to set the stage for sophomore
outfielder Uyen Mai, who singled bringing home two runs. Mai would score
on Jane-E Yamamoto’s fielder’s choce to give the Mustangs their fourth
run. DeMello added an RBI single.
Pairings for the CIF playoffs will be announced Monday.
“I’ll take it because it’s tough down there,” said Mesa coach Rick
Buonarigo. “It’s a tough place to score a lot of runs. We had some
opportunities slip through our hands, but overall I think we did well.”
