COSTA MESA - Curt Garner’s scoring fly ball to center field in the
bottom of the 10th inning plated Chad Chop as host Vanguard University
came from behind to defeat UC San Diego, 6-5, in a nonconference baseball
game Thursday.
Chop, one of three Lions with two hits, singled in the 10th with one
out, moved to second on Joe Carnahan’s single and advanced to third on a
single by Jason Searle, before Garner’s game-winning sacrifice fly.
VU tied the game in the eighth on a solo home run by Carnahan. Chop
also picked up the victory in relief, getting the final two outs in the
top of the 10th.
Vanguard starter Josh Franco was chased in the sixth after facing four
batters, leading to a four-run inning for UC San Diego, which took a 5-4
lead.
VU relievers Bishop Griggs and Garold Shaffer combined for 4 1/3
