Like many others, we’ve been wondering lately just when Bolsa Chica

State Beach will be open again for business -- well, fun, really. And

like many others, we’ve been getting a little impatient to see the closed

signs and the construction crews long gone from the sand.

Maybe we’ve even been a little worried as the weather’s started

heating up and the day’s have been getting longer.

So it struck us as both good and bad that there’s at least some end in

sight to the months-long reconstruction work.

Word from the source -- Huntington Beach native Mark Weeger who, with

brother Greg, is overseeing the work -- is that the construction along

the north end of the beach will be done this week. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that Edison International still has to get in and wire

up the buildings and bathroom. And there’s still no firm timetable for

when work on the south end of the beach will be finished.

We do remain confident that hometown boys Mark and Greg are making the

best use of the time and giving the state its $12.3 million worth. When

we spoke with them last October, it was clear that their commitment was

what you’d expect from two guys working in their own backyard.

“I don’t want to be embarrassed when I ride my bike by, seeing a

rusting hinge or something,” Greg said.

So, for now we’ll wait -- a little impatiently, but you have to

forgive us that. Summer’s just around the corner, after all, and Bolsa

Chica is among the best and cleanest beaches in the county, not to

mention one of the busiest state beaches in California.

Pretty soon, it’ll also be one of the most modern, which strikes us

just right.
