SPOTLIGHT

TOMMY TUNE

At 6 foot 6, he may be the tallest dancer/choreographer on Broadway.

But star Tommy Tune has never let that get in the way. With nine Tony

Awards to his name, the Texan has become Broadway royalty as a quadruple

threat -- director, choreographer, dancer and singer. He will bring his

skills to Newport-Mesa Friday and Saturday when he and his Manhattan

Rhythm Kings perform as part of the Pacific Symphony Pops.

Andy Warhol once said that Tommy Tune “exudes a cultivated serenity

and a genuine love of life.”

Tune won his first Tony Award in 1973 as best actor in a musical in

Michael Bennett’s “Seesaw.” His work on “My One and Only” garnered him a

double win -- his fourth and fifth Tonys -- for best choreography and

best actor. Two more -- best choreography and best direction -- came with

“Grand Hotel.” And he won his last double for “The Will Roger Follies” --

best direction and best choreography.

The man who has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has shied

away from film. He has appeared in only two -- “Hello Dolly” and “The

Boyfriend.”

Prior to the performance by Tune, Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman will

lead the orchestra in a program of popular music.
