Police are cautioning Newport Beach residents about an e-mail scam
that threatens recipients with an IRS audit and demands them to submit
personal information.
The e-mail asks the recipients to send information including Social
Security number and bank account number within 48 hours, said Newport
Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman.
“People need to realize that the IRS does not conduct audits over the
e-mail,” he said.
There are no known victims of the scam in Newport Beach yet, but
Shulman says there could be. Anybody who gets a similar e-mail should
save it and contact police so computer forensic experts can investigate
it, he said.
