Gail Uilkema, daughter of Ethel Cate and the late Robert Greenfield of

Newport Beach, is one of four finalists for the American Assn. of School

Administrator’s 2002 National Superintendent of the Year award that

recognizes school leaders for their exemplary service to the nation’s

public schools. Uilkema is superintendent of the 2,600-student Piedmont

Unified School District in Piedmont, Calif., and was selected from a pool

of more than 1,000 California school district superintendents as the

state’s nominee by a national blue-ribbon panel of educators, business

professionals and government officials. She has served as principal of a

housing project in Alabama and is a board member of the Assn. for the

Advancement of International Education. The 2002 National Superintendent

of the Year will be announced during the school administrator’s National

Conference on Education on Friday in San Diego. A $10,000 scholarship

will be awarded in the name of the National Superintendent of the Year to

a student from the high school from which the honoree graduated or the

school now serving the winner’s district. All finalists will receive cash

awards and medallions. Superintendents from Maryland, Washington and

North Carolina make up the other three finalists. . . . Newport Beach

resident Patricia Carson received a Prudential Community Champions Rising

Star Award of $250 for Habitat for Humanity Inc. Carson is a sales

associate for Prudential Real Estate Affiliates in Newport Beach and

devotes an average of 10 hours per month as the auction committee

chairwoman for Habitat for Humanity, whose mission is to build homes for

less-fortunate families. Prudential’s awards program recognizes 892

Prudential employees and retirees that excel in volunteer commitment,

service and leadership. The Prudential Foundation is providing more than

$639,000 in grants to the organizations in which the associates

volunteer. . . . Costa Mesa resident Lenard Post received a plaque and a

check while on his last “trash run” in the Harbor View Hills

neighborhood, where he has collected trash for the past 43 years. Doug

Campbell, president of the Homeowners Assn. presented the award to Post.
