NEWPORT COAST - The Sage Hill High boys soccer team strengthened
its grip on second place in the Academy League Friday, defeating visiting
Calvary Chapel of Downey, 3-2.
The victory upped the Lightning’s record to 8-4-1, 5-2-1. With two
league games remaining they are three points ahead of third-place Calvary
Chapel, behind unbeaten league-leading St. Margaret’s.
Sage Hill sophomore Jordan Salinger hooked in a corner kick for the
game’s first goal in the 20th minute. The Lightning broke a 1-1 tie just
before halftime when sophomore Julian Smith-Newman converted an assist
from junior Todd Montakab for a 2-1 lead.
Sophomore Cesar Arriaga dribbled through several defenders before
driving a shot into the net for a 3-1 lead in the 60th minute and the
hosts held on.
Trevor Granger had three saves for the Lightning, which can wrap up
third place with a win or tie Tuesday at Oxford Academy. Sage Hill
