Women’s basketball: Pirates fall to Hornets

Kyra Melville scored a team-high 15 points and had seven rebounds
for Orange Coast, but it wasn’t enough as the visiting Pirates fell to
Fullerton, 61-51, in an Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball game
Wednesday.
Both teams were in second place going into the contest. The Hornets
trailed, 12-10, early in the game, but took a 31-24 lead at halftime and
never trailed after that.
Fullerton took its biggest lead, 43-30, midway through the second
half. OCC came as close as 50-45 with four minutes left to play.
Ashley Nelson chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds for the
Pirates (17-5, 3-2 in conference). Nancy Hatsushi contributed with seven
points.
Fullerton (16-7, 4-1) was led by Danielle Prusinskas with 17 points,
followed by Kristin Peters (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Emily Beaubelle
(11 points, six rebounds).
The Pirates made only eight of 34 field goal attempts in the first
half (.235) and didn’t do much better in the second, hitting only nine of
31 attempts. The Pirates did, however, make 12 of 16 free throw attempts
(.750).
Fullerton was solid at the line, making 19 of 22 free-throw attempts
in the game.
