Mesa falls in OT, 48-45

Costa Mesa High’s girls basketball team came up with its best
effort of the season, according to the Mustangs’ coach, Jim Weeks, but in
the end fell in overtime to Lakewood in the first round of the Artesia
Tournament Monday, 48-45, at Lexington Junior High.
The loss drops Mesa to 2-5. The Mustangs meet Peninsula today at 3:15
in a consolation round game at Hawaiian Gardens Center.
Rhondi Naff, who sent the game into overtime with three free throws in
the final 20 seconds of regulation, led all scorers with 28 points,
including five boards and two assists.
Teammate Christin Caron scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds, but suffered an ankle injury in the overtime session and her status is
uncertain for today.
Eileen Bello had six assists for the Mustangs.
