Boys basketball: Mesa pulls out a win in double overtime

Senior David Conte scored a career-high 43 points to lead Costa
Mesa High to an 85-84 double overtime victory over Marina in the first
round of consolation at the Sonora/Troy boys basketball tournament
Tuesday.
Danny Krikorian made two free throws with 25 seconds left in the
second overtime to give the Mustangs an 83-78 cushion, but Marina
threatened with a three-pointer from James Lambert.
Conte anwered by making two free throws with 14 seconds left to put
Mesa up, 85-81. Marina’s Nick Caramitano was fouled as he was attempting
a three-pointer just before the buzzer. Caramitano made all three free
throws, but it wasn’t enough.
“Both teams had chances to win and finally we just held on,” Costa
Mesa Coach Bob Serven said.
During regulation, Mesa’s Chad Vakili made a three-pointer with 24
seconds left to put the Mustangs ahead, 61-59, but Marina made two free
throws to send the game into overtime.
“It was a game of character and heart, especially after getting beat
the day before like we did,” Serven said. “So we came back and showed a
lot of heart. There were times we could have lost the game. We played
through some foul trouble and gave ourselves a chance to win, which we
did at the end.”
Conte led all scorers and had five three-pointers as well as nine
assists. Carlos Jaime chipped in with 15 points and had 10 rebounds for
the Mustangs (4-3). Jason Millward contributed with seven rebounds.
Marina (3-2) was led by Lambert with 31 points and Caramitano with 25.
The Mustangs play Los Altos Thursday at 3 p.m. in the second round of
consolation at Sonora High.
