A 59-year-old Costa Mesa man was in serious condition Monday after he
was hit by a car at the intersection of 17th Street and Newport Boulevard
on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
Stephen Allen Briggs was not in the crosswalk when he was hit as he
tried to cross East 17th Street, police said. The driver of the car was
identified as 69-year-old Edwin Dean Baker of Valley Center, Calif.
Police said Baker was turning northbound on Newport Boulevard from
17th Street when he struck Briggs. No drugs or alcohol were involved in
the accident, officials said.
Briggs suffered major injuries and head trauma and was taken to
Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, officials said.
Costa Mesa Fire Department paramedic David Defluiter and partner John
Glasgow were on the scene by 3:29 p.m. Sunday.
When they arrived, Briggs still had a pulse and was breathing,
Defluiter said.
“We took a lot of supportive measures at that point, like getting him
enough oxygen and making sure not to aggravate any potential spinal
injuries,” Defluiter said.
