Boys basketball: Young could miss season

The Estancia High boys basketball team dropped a 57-43 decision to
Los Amigos Tuesday in a consolation quarterfinal of the La Quinta
Tournament, but there may be even worse news for the Eagles.
Estancia Coach Chris Sorce said the knee injury sustained by senior
star Micah Young in Monday’s first-round tournament loss to Orange
Lutheran could end the 6-foot-2 forward’s prep career.
Sorce said an MRI was performed Tuesday, but he does not expect good
news from the results. Sorce said the knee popped and buckled underneath
Young as he rushed to contest a shot by an opponent Monday. “He was in a
lot of pain and he had to be carried off the court,” Sorce said. “He
could be out for the season.”
Young, who attended Tuesday’s game on crutches, was a first-team
All-Pacific Coast League and All-Newport-Mesa District selection last
season, when he averaged 17.9 points per game.
Estancia senior Jorge Prado scored a game-high 22 points Tuesday
against the Lobos as the Eagles fell to 1-2.
Joey Lindquist added nine points, while Fernando Maldonado and Matt
Cachola scored five points each for the Eagles.
Estancia faces the Santa Ana-Laguna Beach loser in a 13th-place
quarterfinal Thursday at 5 p.m. at La Quinta High.
