Looking back, 5 years ago this week.
With less than a minute in a CIF Southern Section Division V semifinal
game against Servite, visiting Newport Harbor High quarterback Josiah
Fredricksen finds Brad La Bass for a 19-yard touchdown to give the
Sailors football team a 23-16 upset victory. Fredricksen also throws an
8-yard touchdown to Danny Pulido in the first quarter. Ray Ohrel runs for
152 yards and a 16-yard touchdown on 30 carries.
The Estancia boys basketball team swats away the Newport Harbor
Sailors, 53-38, to finish third place in the Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic.
Three Eagles notch double-digit scoring, including Selwyn Mansell with 18
points, Sam Nelson with 10 and Gavin Rainey, who comes off the bench,
scores 11.
The Costa Mesa girls basketball team cruises past crosstown rival
Estancia, 57-30, in the fifth place final of the Mayfair-Bellflower
Tip-Off Classic at Mayfair High. Costa Mesa senior Koo Kim paces the
Mustangs with 24 points, en route to all-tournament honors, while
freshman teammate Kalena Jackson scores 10. Estancia plays without Amy
Deming (sprained ankle) and Jennifer McCartin (ineligible), while
flu-ridden Megan McCartin plays sparingly. Vivi Rodriguez leads the
Eagles with 12 points.
Before facing Estancia in the Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic, Newport
Harbor’s Scott Archbold drives through the lane and scores on a layup
while getting fouled and converts the free throw with 18 seconds left to
give the Sailors a 41-38 victory over Troy.
Looking back, 10 years ago this week.
The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team grabs a 58-53 victory
over Marina in a semifinal of the Daily Pilot Tip-off Classic. Justin
McIntee drops in a career-high 37 points to lead the Sailors. McIntee
nails 10 of 13 from the field and 17 of 23 from the line, and also grabs
17 rebounds. The Sailors go on to finish runner-up in the tourney after a
loss to Huntington Beach.
Estancia’s boys basketball team digs down deep and comes up with a
67-59 overtime victory over Torrance in a fifth place semifinal of the
Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic. The Eagles’ reserves come to the rescue as
Russell King, John Johansen and Victor Trujillo come off the bench and
direct a comeback with a tightfisted full-court press. Matt Fuerbringer
scores 21 points, grabs eight rebounds and blocks three shots for the
Eagles, while Jim Faulkner pours in a game-high 22 points.
The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team thrives in the clutch with
a huge victory over Santa Rosa, 5-4 in penalty kicks, to advance to its
second state championship final in three years. Regulation play ends in a
1-1 tie and each team scores once in a pair of overtime sessions. OCC’s
Brian Slayback scores the first goal off an assist from P.J. Polowski,
nine minutes into the game. Lance Barker ties the game, 2-2, in the
second overtime period. The Pirates then convert four straight penalty
kicks and goalie Ken Langworthy blocks Santa Rosa’s fourth shot for the
win.
