It would have been hard to come up with a better story line than the
finale of Edison High School’s football regular season.
The league championship is on the line, and what school is standing in
the way? Archrival Fountain Valley.
In recent years, the Chargers might have come ever so close to eking
out the victory, only to just miss the win and the right to claim the
Battle for the Bell. This year there was no disappointment as Edison
rumbled to a come-from-behind 19-10 win.
With the victory, the 2001 Edison team earned its part in the school’s
storied football history by sharing the Sunset League championship, an
honor the team hadn’t tasted in 11 years. It then added to that history
last Friday by walloping St. John Bosco, 56-34, in the first round of CIF
Division I playoffs.
Next up is Bishop Amat High at 7:30 p.m. Friday, once again in the
friendly environment at Orange Coast College.
Everyone who cheered on Edison during the raucous win over Fountain
Valley -- not to mention those who didn’t -- should set aside those few
hours Friday night to root them on, again, as they attempt to charge
through the CIF playoffs and win the team’s fourth division championship.
They’ve earned that support.
Go Chargers!
