Men’s soccer: UCI coach, players earn Big West honors

UC Irvine men’s soccer standouts Jon Spencer and Saul Wolf, who
helped the Anteaters contend for the Big West Conference crown, have
earned top honors on the coaches’ all-conference selections.
Spencer, a senior forward, was named Co-Offensive Player of the Year
with UC Santa Barbara’s Rob Friend, while Wolf a senior, shared Defensive
Player of the Year honors with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Barrymore
Matthews and UC Santa Barbara’s Reuben Bates.
Spencer led the Anteaters in scoring with seven goals and three
assists.
Wolf had three goals and five assists for the Anteaters this season
and anchored a defense that produced a school-record 10 shutouts.
UCI’s George Kuntz was named Coach of the Year after guiding the
Anteaters to a 10-4-6 record, 6-1-3 and a second-place finish in
conference.
UCI junior Scott Bowman (six goals, four assists), as well as senior
teammates Sean Gesell and goalkeeper C.J. Cooper (four shutouts) were
named to the first team.
Freshman Dardo Acuna (11 points), senior Lawrence Smalls (four points)
and junior Frankie Clay represented UCI on the second team, while Chris
Ruiz received honorable mention.
