Girls tennis: Yelsey set to defend PCL singles crown

LAGUNA BEACH - Junior sensation Anne Yelsey of Corona del Mar High,
the top seed in the Pacific Coast League girls tennis singles
championships, won two matches Thursday to advance to today’s semifinals
at noon at Laguna Beach High.
Yelsey, the defending PCL champion, will face an opponent from
University, CdM Coach Andy Stewart said, while CdM teammates Leslie
Damion and Juliette Mutzke will square off in the other semifinal.
CdM senior Brittany Reitz, the defending CIF Southern Section
individual singles champion, was ruled ineligible because opposing PCL
coaches voted her ineligible “because she didn’t play enough matches,”
Stewart said.
Reitz was last year’s PCL runner-up to Yelsey, who forfeited her CIF
quarterfinal match last year and is hoping to avenge that setback in
2001.
In doubles, CdM’s Amanda Rubenstein and Brittany Minna will play
Cameron Barron-Sandman and Lindsay Butterwick of Laguna Beach in the
semifinals today, while CdM’s Brittany Holland and Taylynn Snyder, the
top seed, will face a team from Laguna Beach.
