It was all about timing in Newport Harbor High’s 14-8 nonleague
boys water polo loss to visiting Foothill Friday.
Michael Bury scored with 1:12 left in the third quarter to cut
Foothill’s lead to 10-7.
Newport Harbor (10-9, 3-1) seemed to be picking up some momentum, but
problems with the shot clock slowed things down a little for the Sailors.
“The clock problems broke some of the rythym we had,” Newport Coach
Jason Lynch said.
Foothill Coach Jim Brumm said the interruption affected both teams.
“I thought Newport played well, especially in the first half,” Brumm
said. “Maybe the clock problems affected both teams. It affected them a
little more than it affected us.”
The Foothill offense took over from there. Brad Unroe scored four
goals in the fourth quarter within a span of five minutes to push the
Knights ahead for good.
With a man advantage, Newport’s Ross Sinclair scored with 1:33 left
for the Sailors’ only goal in the final quarter.
Although Foothill ended the game with momentum, it was Newport who
came on strong in the opening quarter.
Bury and Nathan Weiner had goals for the Sailors to take a 2-2 tie
into the second quarter.
Foothill answered with three straight goals to open the second quarter
and never trailed after that.
The Sailors’ Ross Sinclair scored the last goal of the half with 15
seconds left to cut Foothill’s lead to 7-5.
Newport was led by Bury (three goals) and Sinclair (three goals, two
assists).
Alex Cripe had five goals and Brad Unroe had four for Foothill (13-6,
3-0).
