Shadowlands

Oct. 15-21

Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team takes advantage of Back

Bay rival Corona del Mar and its Game 2 letdown. The Sailors answer a 9-5

deficit in that game and defeat the Sea Kings, 6-15, 15-10, 15-6, 15-7.

Senior middle blocker M.E. Clayton records one of her four blocks to end

the third game and gives the Sailors a 2-1 edge. Beth Waterman leads

Newport with 21 kills and 17 digs, while teammate Melissa Snow slams 15

kills and two blocks. CdM is led by Sarah Petry who has 24 kills and

Hayden Aley who has nine.

The Corona del Mar girls tennis team singles players lead the Sea

Kings to a 10-8 victory over Back Bay rival Newport Harbor. With CdM down

a set and only three sets remaining in the final round, junior Nina

Vaughan, freshman Nadia Vaughan and Caylan Leslie sweep in heroic fashion

to give the Sea Kings the come-from-behind victory. “That’s just what I

expected,” Newport Harbor Coach Fletcher Olson says of the close match.

Nina Vaughan, the previous year’s Sea View League singles champion, has

to fight off Newport Harbor’s toughest player, Erica Nelson, 7-5, to give

the Sea Kings the win.

The Costa Mesa boys water polo team comes alive and scores 17 goals in

the final three periods after playing to a 2-2 first quarter deadlock to

earn a 19-10 Pacific Coast League-opening road victory at Aliso Niguel.

Todd Hylton paces the Mustangs with eight goals, while Jimmy Walters adds

two goals and five assists. Hunter Taylor contributes two goals and four

assists and brother Justin Taylor records 15 saves for the winners. Chad

Cleaver and Alex Soria also join in on the scoring fun, collecting three

goals each.

Jon Pharris records eight saves and four steals in front of his cage,

leading the Newport Harbor boys water polo team to a 16-12 victory over

Riverside Poly. Luke Alvarado leads the Sailors with five goals, while

Jeff Leeper has three, and Matt Moreau and Jon Ucciferri tally two each.

The Corona del Mar High boys water polo team takes an important step

toward the Sea View League title with a 6-5 win over Back Bay rival

Newport Harbor, in front of an estimated 400 at CdM. Senior Brent O’Brien

leads the Sea Kings with five goals. “I’m very pleased,” CdM Coach John

Vargas says. “I’m pleased we won, but Bill Barnett did a good job

scouting us and we still have some things to work on.” CdM senior Austin

Weir finds the net 47 seconds into the game. But with one second left in

the first quarter, Newport’s Oliver Fleener dumps in a shot for the

equalizer. O’Brien scores a pair of goals before halftime and the Sea

Kings never relinquish their lead.

Costa Mesa’s Bobby “Boogaloo” Shwartz finishes fifth overall but he

has a big hand in determining the winner of the 1991 Speedway Motorcycle

National Championship at the Costa Mesa Speedway. In a wild finals race

of the evening, Shwartz prevails after two restarts to deny Steve Lucero

the championship and hand it to Mike Faria. Costa Mesa’s Josh Larsen

finishes fourth.

The Orange Coast College football team explodes for a 56-6

annihilation of San Diego City. The Pirates hammer the Knights for 369

rushing yards. Shane Sherman, who fills in for the injured Adrain Steen,

leads the ground assault with 115 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries.

He also scores off a 37-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Donnie Smith

in the second quarter to give OCC a 21-0 lead. The Bucs then score 21

more points in the third quarter, including two touchdown passes from

Smith. To this date, OCC outscores opponents 165-33, as the Bucs reach a

4-0 record.
