Community college women’s water polo: Pirates win Ventura

VENTURA - In dominating fashion, the Orange Coast College women’s
water polo team outscored opponents, 32-7, in its final two games,
leading to a Ventura Tournament title Saturday.
The Pirates (16-0), ranked No. 1 in the state by the Community College
Women’s Water Polo poll, ran through Ventura in the finals, 19-2. OCC
freshman Erica Nicholson led the Pirates with four goals, while Nichole
Sonnenfield, Tia Montalvo, Neisha Hoagland, Devon Wright, Ellen Dolan,
Amy Contreras and Courtney Brown notched two goals each. Megan Bowers
tallied one goal, while Newport Harbor High product Heather Deyden (3
saves) and Casey Finnegan (2 saves) anchored the defense as goalies.
Coast advanced to the title game with a 13-5 victory over Fullerton.
Nicholson and Sonnenfield led the way with three goals each. Deyden
recorded three saves in the contest.
The Pirates return to action Wednesday, when they play at Riverside at
3 p.m.
