Getting fired by the Costa Mesa Senior Center in May 2000 didn’t slow
former Executive Director Alan Meyers down one bit.
Meyers, an alias for a man whose real name is still uncertain, was
fired by the senior center board after it learned that police were
investigating whether he had invented his credentials, impersonated
doctors and stolen money from dozens of clinics across the country over a
30-year period.
But two months later, Meyers was the director of Middle Way, a
nonprofit for the developmentally disabled in Sebastopol.
“From the beginning, he had poor relationships with staff,” Interim
Director Jeffrey E. Edelheit said. “He claimed to go to meetings but
could not be reached, lived at the office and denied it, fired good
employees and created poor relationships with key agencies.”
Nothing was stolen, but Meyers had several mysterious disappearances
that Middle Way officials later learned were due to his trial.
Meyers was convicted of first-degree theft last month for bilking an
Oregon health clinic out of nearly $10,000.
When he failed to show up for work that month, Middle Way officials
began to wonder. Research turned up his past and his new conviction.
So, what’s next, Ed?
After three years as the chairman of Newport Beach’s planning
commissioner, Ed Selich vacated his chair for his successor, Larry
Tucker, this month.
His colleagues gave him a nice plaque and showered praise on him, some
of which was maybe just a little tongue in cheek.
“I’m comfortable that Ed is still on the commission, gleefully waiting
to correct my mistakes,” Tucker said. “Thank you Ed, for a job well
done.”
Selich responded that he’ll try to avoid “ex-chairmanitis” and sit
quietly in the corner.
Well, we’re doubtful he’ll stay quiet for too long. The Corona del Mar
resident hasn’t actually said anything to us, but rumors are sizzling
that he’ll make a run for Councilman Dennis O’Neil’s seat in 2002 (O’Neil
can’t get elected again because of term limits).
Hmm. Selich wasn’t around on Friday to talk about this, but we LOVE
rumors, so here you go. And needless to say, we’ll let you know as soon
as Selich gives us a call.
