Ocean View Little League will not repeat as the District 62 Tournament
of Champions.
Fountain Valley No. 1 saw to it that there will be a new district
champion in 2001, as it beat Ocean View’s top playoff entry, 12-4, Monday
at Costa Mesa American Little League.
Fountain Valley, which outscored its first three tournament opponents,
29-7, was to meet surprising Costa Mesa National No. 1 in Wednesday’s title game.
Costa Mesa National No. 1 prevented an all-Fountain Valley final by
beating Fountain Valley No. 2, 4-2.
Also on Monday, Huntington Valley No. 1 advanced to Wednesday’s final
by shutting out Fountain Valley No. 1, 3-0. The Marlins challenged
Seaview No. 1, a 4-2 winner Monday over Ocean View No. 2, 4-2.
In the Minor B final, it was another Huntington Valley-Seaview
showdown as Huntington Valley No. 1 whipped Costa Mesa National No. 1,
7-1, while Seaview No. 2 upended Huntington Valley No. 2, 9-2.
Ocean View, however, did manage to win the Senior Minor District 62
banner Monday by edging Westminster No. 1, 5-4, in the division final.
MINOR A DIVISION
Huntington Valley 3, Fountain Valley 0
The Marlins advanced to the division final by posting their first
shutout of the season.
Barry Luke and Tanner Phillips combined to one-hit Fountain Valley No.
1, and the duo was supported by the solid defense of third baseman Julian
Herrera and shortstop Michael Chairez.
Kyle Ball pitched all six innings for the Mets and gave up just four
hits, but the Marlins were able to capitalize on aggressive baserunning
to score two, first inning runs.
Rob Toth’s second-inning single scored Herrera for the game’s third
run.
Huntington Valley No. 1 2, Seaview No. 1 1
Trevor Carberry’s hard hit single to the right field fence in the
bottom of the eighth inning drove in Danny Hurtado (who had a leadoff
double) with the winning run for Huntington Valley in this second round
contest Saturday.
Huntington Valley pitchers Tanner Phillips, Barry Luke and Jimmy
Miller combined to strike out seven and give up three hits to the 33
batters they faced.
Seaview hurlers Donald Sneed, Kyle Boswell and Josh Amaral combined to
strike out 10 and yield just four hits to 36 batters.
The Marlins’ defense, led again by Chairez at shortstop and Bennet
Allen at second base, got out of a bases loaded jam with no out in the
fifth inning. Seaview catcher Brian Visnoski had an outstanding game
behind the plate as he stopped potential game winning runs for Huntington
Valley, including one with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning to
send the game into extra innings.
