A car theft last week led to a chase between police and the alleged
thief running from Huntington Beach to Los Angeles, sometimes reaching
speeds of 90 miles an hour before ending in a collision.
Anthony Lynn Allen, a 28-year-old Long Beach resident, was charged on
suspicion of vehicle theft and felony evading in the chase.
Sgt. Chris Filicicchia, of the Huntington Beach Police Department,
said a gray 1986 Chevy Blazer was reported stolen from an area near the
intersection of Edinger Avenue and Goldenwest Street at about 2:59 a.m.
June 21.
Officers spotted the vehicle traveling northbound on the San Diego
Freeway, then chased it until it to the Orange Street exit in Long Beach
-- along the way it ran numerous stop signs and red lights, police said,
adding that the Chevy Blazer ultimately returned to the northbound San
Diego Freeway at Avalon Boulevard.
The Los Angeles Police Department took over the chase as it left Long
Beach and entered Los Angeles. Allen was caught after the Blazer crashed
into a stationary object near the corner of 91st Street and Broadway
Avenue, Filicicchia said.
An Anaheim police helicopter assisted in the pursuit.
Pedestrian dies after being hit by car
A Huntington Beach pedestrian is dead, and a 17-year-old boy seriously
injured, after two cars collided at the intersection of Warner Avenue and
Newland Street on Saturday.
Alvarado Lorenzo, a resident in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the
scene at about 11:21 a.m. after the boy’s brown 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee
was struck by a gray 1988 Plymouth Caravel driven by a girl, 17, police
said.
No information on the teens was released due to their age, they added.
Lt. Bill Peterson, of the Huntington Beach Police Department, said the
boy was westbound on Warner when his vehicle was struck by the Plymouth.
The collision sent the Jeep veering to the right, where it hit
Lorenzo, who was standing on the northwest corner of the intersection.
Lorenzo was thrown back westward and later died on scene.
Still moving, the Jeep smashed into a traffic signal pole and
sustained major damage to it and the driver, police officials said.
Peterson said the boy suffered serious injuries in the crash, and was
treated by paramedics before being transported to UCI Medical Center for
more care.
No information was given on the condition of the female driver.
Police officials said the cause of the accident is still under
investigation.
