Newport Harbor girls top 10 for 2000-2001
1. Amber Steen posts national best this season (4:43.75) to win 1,600
meters at CIF Southern Section Masters Meet.
2. Amber Steen wins CIF Southern Section Division II titles in the
1,600 and 3,200, after winning both, as well as 800, at Sea View League
Finals. She goes on to finish third in the state in the 1,600.
3. Amber Steen repeats as CIF Southern Section Division II individual
cross country champion to lead Tars to fifth-place team finish.
4. Girls tennis team is CIF Southern Section Division III runner-up.
5. Carly Geehr (two), Nicole Mackey (two) and Hayley Peirsol (one)
each post top-three finishes to help swim team finish fourth at CIF
Southern Section Division I Finals.
6. Water polo team, led by Sea View League Player of the Year
Katherine Belden, wins league crown and advances to CIF Southern Section
Division I quarterfinals.
7. Taylor Govaars (volleyball); Katherine Belden, Jenna Booth, Heather
Deyden and Erin Ball (water polo); and Amy Burlingham (soccer) are all
named All-CIF Southern Section.
8. Swimmers Carly Geehr (200-yard freestyle and 200 individual
medley), Nicole Mackey (100-yard butterfly), Hayley Peirsol (500 free),
and track sprinter Amy Burlingham (200 meters) win individual Sea View
League titles.
9. Sunset League champion field hockey team’s best season ever ends as
postseason Tournament of Champions runner-up.
10. Soccer team gets school’s first two CIF Southern Section playoff
victories, before falling in Division II second round.
