His Way Ministry, whose members make the Newport Pier their singing
stage on most days, are worried about Newport Beach’s proposed, Dennis
Rodman-inspired noise ordinance.
They’re worried it might drive them off the Pier, if just a few people
complain.
The ordinance, which would give police more power, is up for final
consideration before the City Council June 12. If approved, it will take
effect 30 days from then.
But police say officers have not even made contact with His Way
Ministry members.
And Lt. Doug Fletcher says they have nothing to worry about.
However, Fletcher does remember a man who was found singing very
loudly at the base of the pier. Fletcher said his booming voice, which
would mostly be heard during the late evening hours, disturbed residents
nearby. They promptly complained.
So according to Fletcher, as long as you don’t shout and wake people
up in the middle of the night, you can sing all you want.
City Hall Carwash special
Getting our cars washed is not exactly something your Piloteers are
real good at, if you know what we mean.
So when we saw a couple of guys working away on parked cars in Newport
Beach City Hall’s parking lot last Wednesday, it naturally sparked our
curiosity.
Here’s the deal: The city has a contract with a private car washing
company that cleans city-owned cars every Tuesday. The next day, they
come back and offer to take care of cars that belong to city officials.
At six bucks a wash, that doesn’t seem like a bad deal to us, especially
when you can leave your scruffy looking wagon in the morning and return
to a shiny, polished reincarnation of it in the afternoon. One chore
taken care of.
And if any of you have already started thinking about toxic runoff the
service might set in motion, we can comfort you just a little.
Gail McElroy, the city’s new spokeswoman, assured us that the crews
use deionized water and no soap at all. Sounds good to us. Now all we
need to do is convince the bosses around here to follow suit.
