Daily Pilot Cup: Harbor Day slays Goliath

Steve Virgen

COSTA MESA - When Harbor Day’s fifth- and sixth grade girls soccer

team took the field in its Daily Pilot Cup quarterfinal game Saturday,

there was one thing it noticed. The TeWinkle Trojans were a lot bigger

than the Seahawks.

Harbor Day Coach Larry Webb told his girls to play without fear and

they responded with a 1-0 victory and never allowed a shot on goal at The

Farm Complex.

“I don’t think we played like we were afraid,” Webb said.

Midway through the first half, the Seahawks got the goal they needed.

Kirby Anderson dribbled through defenders and found an opening. She

blasted a shot into the net, for what proved to be the gamewinner.

Harbor Day had plenty of more scoring chances, but TeWinkle goalie

Jaye Hellmich stuffed the opportunities. She, in fact, turned back 17

shots, nine in the second half.

With Hellmich working overtime, the Seahawks showed no mercy. They

continued to attack as Emily Hilgren, Annallse Leffler, Amanda Shaw and

Mallory Martin contributed for the offense. Jill Damion, Kelly

McKitterick, Kara Percival, Allison Damon, Sarah Sullivan, Danielle

Goodman, Christie Mead, Madison Kawakami and Alex Gorab also took part in

producing the shutout.

Earlier in the day, the Seahawks, the Pool B champions, defeated

Anderson, 3-1. Kirby Anderson scored another goal, as did Hilgren and

McKitterick. Emily Webb chipped in with an assist.

TeWinkle Coach Mark Gleason said his Trojans, the wild card team of

Pool E, played with a bit of inexperience. He said four of his players

were just starting to learn the game and he was proud of the efforts of

Danielle Grant, Ashtun Henderson, Krista Hulett, Hannah Johnson, Kayla

Kuvakas, Becky Lau, Chelsea Peca, Amber Rider, Bridget Gleason, Julia

Tasedan and Tamisha Williams.

Harbor Day will play Kirk McIntosh’s Kaiser No. 3 team in the

semifinals today at 11 a.m. Kaiser overcame a 1-0 deficit and defeated

Mariner’s Christian, 3-1, in the quarterfinals. Emily Olhaver scored the

game-tying goal and Alesha Young put in the go-ahead score when her shot

caromed off the left crossbar. Megan Munce netted the insurance goal.

Earlier in the day, Kaiser defeated California, 5-1.
