NEWPORT BEACH - On cue, defending Pacific Coast League singles
champion Cameron Ball of Corona del Mar High, along with teammates and
reigning PCL doubles champions Michael Bean and Peter Kulmaticki,
advanced to the league semifinals today at 3 p.m. at the Balboa Bay Club
Racquet Club.
Ball, a junior, swept Costa Mesa senior Vijay Lilaram without dropping
a game and beat teammate Justin Ning in the quarterfinals Tuesday, 6-0,
6-1.
Bean and Kulmaticki, seeded second behind teammates Brian Morton and
Garrett Snyder, advanced to the semifinals after sweeping University’s
Nam Nguyen and Michael Marini, who beat Costa Mesa’s Marvin Lam and
Michael Chindalah in the first round, 6-2, 6-3.
Morton-Snyder, who reached the boys interscholastic 18s doubles final
at Ojai last week, defeated Mesa’s Coung Nguyen and Spencer Solomon in
the quarterfinals. Nguyen, a senior, and Solomon, a junior, knocked off
Uni’s Andy Joe and Jeff Kim in the most riveting match of the day, 6-3,
3-6, 6-1.
Morton-Snyder will face Laguna Beach’s Anton Brandt and Jeff Ferguson
in the upper-bracket semifinals at the BBC Racquet Club, while
Bean-Kulmaticki play Uni’s Anson Hsu and Edwin Chen in the other
semifinal.
In singles, second-seeded Ball will face Uni’s Jeff Lawrence, the
third seed, in the semifinals, while top-seeded Aaron Yovan of University
will play Northwood’s Andrew Cho, the fourth seed. Yovan defeated Ball
