Girls track and field: Estancia’s hopes denied

IRVINE - When Estancia High girls track and field coach Joan
Carlisle heard that crosstown rival Costa Mesa defeated Northwood last
week, she anxiously expected a great chance for victory.
Yet, the Eagles win over Costa Mesa (or the Mustangs’ win over
Northwood) had no bearing Thursday as Estancia lost to the host
Timberwolves, 75-51, in Pacific Coast League action.
“I really don’t know,” Carlisle said of her explanation for the loss.
“I thought because (Northwood) beat Costa Mesa, we would be able to win.
This track is slow (for the runners) because it’s so soft. It’s nice on
your shins, but not kind to the speed.”
Senior Liz Huipe and junior Hanni Geider were still able to win two
events each.
Huipe (5:45.3) came in ahead of sophomore Diana Rosete (5:48.1) in the
1,600 meters and they provided the same finish in the 3,200 when the
senior won in 12:15.9.
Huipe, bound for Vanguard University in the fall, is definitely at a
different time in her life than Rosete, distance coach Charlie Appell
said.
“They are two different stories,” Appell said. “(Rosete is) realizing
this season is a second-place role. But, next year, she’ll have a bigger
role.”
Geider won the 100 (12.9) and 200 (13.0), finishing one-tenth of a
second ahead of her twin, Jasmine, in both races.
Estancia sophomore Amanda Abbott triumphed in the triple jump (28-10),
which was decided on her final attempt. She also grabbed second place in
the long jump (13-2).
Eagles freshman Marilyn Reich completed a personal best when she
finished second in the 800 (2:31.2).
Estancia will complete in the Cerritos Invitational, Thursday, before
taking on University April 26.
