Newport Harbor High junior Katherine Belden and Corona del Mar High
sophomores Christina Hewko and Danielle Carlson top a list of eight Back
Bay girls water polo standouts named All-CIF Southern Section.
Belden, the Sea View League Player of the Year, is a first-team
selection in Division I, while Hewko ad Carlson, who led CdM to the CIF
Division IV semifinals, are first-team choices in that division.
CdM’s Daniela DiGiacomo and Lindsay Daley are second-team picks in
Division IV, while Newport senior Jenna Booth made the Division I second
team.
Newport’s Heather Deyden and CdM’s Malia Tarayao are third-team
honorees in their respective divisions.
Belden, who led the Sailors in goals (53) and assists (34), was a
second-team All-CIF choice as a sophomore and a third-team choice as a
junior.
Carlson and Hewko, the top two scorers for the Sea Kings with 73 and
58 goals, respectively, are repeat first-team honorees in Division IV.
Both were first-team All-Pacific Coast League performers this season, in
which CdM shared the league crown with University and Laguna Beach.
Hewko (97 steals) and Carlson (78) were also defensive stalwarts.
Coach John Vargas’ squad entered the playoffs as the top seed, but
lost to eventual champion Laguna Beach, 7-6, in the semifinals.
DiGiacomo, a sophomore, and Daley, a senior, were second-team All-PCL
choices. DiGiacomo was an all-around standout (34 steals and 22 goals),
while Daley was the team’s third-leading scorer with 34 goals.
Booth’s 49 goals and 26 assists trailed only Belden for the Sea View
League champions, who fell to El Toro, 7-6, in five overtimes, in the
Division I quarterfinals.
Deyden, a senior, was a two-time all-league goalie for Harbor
Co-Coaches Bill Barnett and Brian Kruetzkamp. She made 232 saves this
season.
Tarayao, a senior, was a key defensive performer for CdM, collecting
28 steals.
