Boys and girls swimming: Peirsol’s debut is smooth

IRVINE - The Newport Harbor High boys and girls swim teams won

their first Sea View League meets of the season as Sailors junior

standout Aaron Peirsol swam in his first dual of the season against

Woodbridge at Heritage Park Wednesday.

Fresh off his national titles in the 100-meter and 200 backstroke,

Peirsol, the 2000 Olympic silver medalist in the 200 backstroke, won the

200-yard freestyle (1:47.04), 100 backstroke (51.67) and contributed in

the victorious 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. The Sailors (3-2, 1-1

in league) won, 132-41, as the Warriors dropped to 0-5, 0-2,

The Newport girls squad (4-1, 1-1) defeated Woodbridge (3-2, 0-2),

107-64, as junior Carly Geehr, sophomore Nicole Mackey and sophomore Mai

Tajima were double winners. The trio also contributed to victories in the

200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Geehr won the 100 freestyle (54.21) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.66). Mackey touched the wall first in the 200 individual medley

(2:10.37) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.34). Tajima turned in first-place

finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:04.70) and the 500 freestyle (5:22.27).
