Literacy Volunteers to hold trivia contest
The Literacy Volunteers of America will host the 2001 Trivia Challenge
benefiting the Adult Literacy Program at 5:45 p.m. March 30 at the
Huntington Beach Central Library Theater, 7111 Talbert Ave., Huntington
Beach.
Fifteen city, corporate and community-sponsored three-member teams
will compete for the title of “Trivia Champs.” Cost to attend is $10 and
all proceeds will go the Adult Literacy Program in Huntington Beach.

‘Oklahoma!’ at Huntington Beach High
The Academy of Performing Arts will present the musical “Oklahoma!”
starting at 2 p.m. March 18, 24 and 25 at the Huntington Beach High

City to sponsor disaster preparedness course
The Huntington Beach Fire Department Emergency Service Office will
present a Disaster Preparedness course for neighborhoods, schools and
businesses from 7:45 a.m. to noon April 7 at the Huntington Beach City
Council Chambers, 2000 Main St.
Topics will include threats to Huntington Beach including fire, flood,
earthquakes and riots, as well as how to prepare your home and family and
how to put together a team to respond to a disaster. Free. Information:

Senior dance set for Friday night
There will be a Friday Night Over 55 Dance from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Friday at the Michael E. Rodgers Seniors’ Center, 1706 Orange Ave.,

Auditions open for Opera Camp
Auditions for the Opera Pacific’s Opera Camp 2001 will take place 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21 at the Academy for the Performing Arts at
Huntington Beach High School, Building M, 1905 Main St. Singers should
bring one song and one monologue to the audition. Callbacks will be 8:30

Murphy named Woman of the Year
Assemblyman Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach) selected Eileen Murphy as
Woman of the Year for the 67th District. Murphy, 84, is a member and
frequent spokesperson for the Bolsa Chica Land Trust as well as
Huntington Beach Tomorrow, a group that Harman co-founded in 1986 and
which actively supports the acquisition and preservation of the Bolsa
Chica mesa.
Environmental Board accepting nominations
The Environmental Board of Huntington Beach is accepting nominations
for ideas to preserve and protect community resources. All Huntington
Beach businesses, community groups, schools and individuals are
encouraged to submit names of their candidates.
Categories consist of water management, air quality, community
beautification, energy conservation, waste reduction and recycling.
Applications can be picked up at the City of Huntington Beach
Environmental Board, 2000 Main St.. Deadline for submitting applications

Fountain Valley to host theater trip
The city of Fountain Valley Community Services Division will host a
trip to see “The Lion King” at 11:30 a.m. April 22 at the Pantages
Theater, 6233 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood. The excursion will offer
orchestra seats and transportation to and from the theater. Cost is $107

City, chamber to host retail training program
The Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce and the city of Huntington
Beach Economic Development Department will host an Independent Retail
Training Program by America’s Retail and Consumer Authority. The event
will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. April 24 at the Huntington Beach
Central Library, 7111 Talbert Ave.
Barbara Wold will speak about building new and repeat business,
increasing customer traffic and sales figures and gaining customer
feedback.
Cost is $15 for prepaid registration and $20 at the door. Checks can
be made out to the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce. Reservations
