Community college track: Kroening a workhorse

MISSION VIEJO - Orange Coast College freshman Julie Kroening
finished in the top three in seven events to help the Pirates defeat
Riverside and Saddleback in a three-way Orange Empire Conference track
and field meet Friday at Saddleback.
Kroening, out of Costa Mesa High, won the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.5),
was second in the 100 hurdles (17.2), second in the high jump (4-8),
third in the javelin (81-2 1/2), third in the long jump (15-1 3/4) and
competed on the winning 400 relay, as well as the second-place 1,600
relay.
Heather Shurtleff won the 1,500 (5:15.6) and 800 (2:21.3) for OCC.
Carl Olssen won the 110 high hurdles (15.0) and the 400 hurdles (57.1)
and was second in the triple jump to pace the OCC men, who fell to
Saddleback, 87-81.
Both OCC teams are now 2-1 in conference.
