The Orange County Health Agency’s environmental health division closed
a section of the Surf City shoreline Tuesday, prohibiting any surfing or
swimming in a 1,000-foot area running up coast from the Santa Ana River.
The affected Huntington Beach waters, as well as a similar area
running down coast into Newport Beach, were closed when about 1,000
gallons of sewage spilled from the Costa Mesa Sanitation District.
A buildup of grease blocked a sewer line in the district’s collection
system and ultimately caused the spill, agency officials said.
The area will remain closed until follow-up water quality monitoring
meets acceptable standards, they added.

Police to conduct DUI checkpoint
The Huntington Beach Police Department will conduct a sobriety and
driver’s license checkpoint at the intersection of Beach Boulevard and
Blaylock Street between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday.
Police officials said the motorists driving under the influence of
alcohol are a major concern of the department and citizens because the
combination often results in tragedies that affect the entire community.
The police traffic bureau hopes to prevent any serious injury or fatal
collisions over the weekend by stopping intoxicated drivers before an
accident occurs.
