READERS RESPOND -- Alternate sites suggested for skate park
- Share via
For an alternate site for the skate park, how about the park at the
end of California Street -- we call it Moon Park. It’s just off the river
trail. Just an idea.

The new recreation center is being built downtown. I believe it’s
slated to open in May or June, in which case the old facility, the old
gym and pool were to be leveled and turned into parking spaces. Perhaps
that could be modified to accommodate the skateboard park. It seems like
a good site; we don’t lose green space at the other end of Lions Park.
The infrastructure there would support the skateboard park with the
bathrooms and telephones. A sound wall might be built if the library has
any complaint, but they’ve lived with a pretty noisy swimming pool there
for a long time, so that shouldn’t make a big difference.
Anyway, I think the skateboard park should go where the old gym is
going to be torn down. It’ll be a little bit of a delay because it’s not
quite a location yet, but it will be very soon -- as soon as the new
facility opens and they’ll be leveling the old one. Perhaps they can even
incorporate part of the old swimming pool into the skateboard park, and
preserve some of our history because that old pool -- they just don’t
make them like that anymore.

I’m in favor of a skateboard park. There’s plenty of room in the
Tewinkle Park area to build a park. There’s restrooms there and
everything. I’m definitely an advocate of the skateboard park and am
willing to do what I need to do to assist in having this done.

Two afternoons a week, I patrol portions of the city as a volunteer in
a Costa Mesa police car. One of those places is TeWinkle Park.
I have a location there I’d like to offer for a skateboard park due
north of the tennis courts, a beautiful area that is totally unused --
I’ve never seen anybody in there. It’s large enough. It has trees that
could probably remain. It does have residences along the north border, so
some additional sound mitigation might be required. I offer that as a
suggestion for the location of a skateboard park.

I work in Costa Mesa. It seems like the obvious place for the skate
park would be over at TeWinkle because it appears that it is a large
area. It already has bathrooms; it already has parking. It is designed to
handle people to play. It just seems like the obvious.

I think there’s a perfect place for the skate park in two areas of
Costa Mesa. I think Fairview Park would be an excellent place for it.
There’s plenty of parking there; there’s large open spaces away from any
homes, away from anyone who would possibly have a complaint with it being
next to them.
The kids need a place to play, a place to skate. Skateboarding is not
a crime; it’s a sport.
There’s also another place in Costa Mesa that may be perfect that I’m
not sure has been considered. That’s on Fairview, right next to the
police station. There’s a large green area there. I’m certain that a
skate park would fit right there, and what could be better than having it
right next to the police station.

As a place for the skateboard park, TeWinkle Park would be great.
There’s a lot of space for a park there. I go there all the time.
