Estancia High’s Chris Candlish breaks loose with 24 points to lead the
Eagles’ boys basketball team to a 76-57 victory over University.
Candlish, who is recovering from a bout with pneumonia, also grabs 10
rebounds and blocks three shots. Estancia sophomore Sam Nelson finishes
with 19 points and eight rebounds.
The Newport Harbor boys basketball team earns it first Sea View League
victory of the season in dramatic fashion. The Sailors stun visiting
Irvine with a 52-44 overtime victory. Harbor freshman point guard Matt
Jameson (seven points) scores, following his own steal with 1:04 left in
regulation, to tie the game, 42-42. The Tars outscore the Vaqueros, 10-2,
in overtime. Wes Badorek leads Harbor with 15 points, while Peter
Cunningham adds 11.
The Corona del Mar boys basketball team hammers El Toro, 67-42. The
victory comes after a 72-45 loss to Santa Margarita, two days before.
Brian Coleman scores a game-high 24 points and Adam Kline chips in with
19.
The Estancia boys soccer team scores a 4-1 victory over host
University. Coach Steve Crenshaw’s Eagles run up a 3-0 halftime lead with
goals from Jose Quintana, Ramon Garcia and Miguel Zelaya, who scores
again in the second half. Willie Alfaro and Gerson Salgado each collect
two assists.
The Corona del Mar girls basketball team, with Jennifer Gardner (flu)
and Brittany Simon (toe) back at full strength, takes down visiting Santa
Margarita, 56-49. Gardner scores a game-high 19 points. Simon contributes
six steals, four assists and four points, while Lindsay Warmington adds
10 points.
Looking back, 10 years ago this week.
The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team hangs on for a 58-55 win
at home over Back Bay rival Corona del Mar. Sophomore Michaela Ross leads
the Tars with a game-high and career-high 24 points. Point guard Mollie
Flint scores a team-high 21 points. Three Harbor players foul out,
pompting the quote of the night from Tars’ Coach Shannon Jakosky, who is
pregnant. “Any more like this and I’m going into premature labor,” she
said.
Estancia’s Leah Braatz converts a layup with four seconds remaining to
insure a 59-56 girls basketball victory over crosstown rival Costa Mesa.
Melody Earle, who is the Daily Pilot’s Athlete of the Week, leads
Estancia with 21 points. Costa Mesa sophomore Olivia DiCamilli scores 30
points, grabs 10 rebounds and dishes out five assists. After Mesa
converts 1 of 2 free throws to trim its deficit to 57-56, Earle heaves an
inbounds pass downcourt that finds Braatz behind the defense.
The Newport Harbor boys soccer team shuts out Back Bay rival Corona
del mar, 1-0. Despite losing their top scorer, Bryan Mallin, to a broken
leg, the Tars hold off the Sea Kings. Harbor’s Shane Perluss finishes a
pass from Jarrett Prott, five minutes into the game.
Estancia’s boys basketball team easily handles crosstown rival Costa
Mesa, 74-39, at the Mustangs’ gym. The Eagles’ pressure defense causes 31
Mesa turnovers, 12 in the first quarter as Estancia jumps out to a 15-5
lead. The Eagles then take a 31-14 advantage into halftime. Estancia’s
Matt Fuerbringer scores 15, while Mike Haas connects on three
three-pointers and finishes with 19 points. Mesa did not have a player
score in double figures.
