Newport-Mesa helps Bush

NEWPORT-MESA -- Jim Madden had seen enough.
Hoping to help end the disputed presidential election between now
President-elect George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore, in early
November Madden broke out the checkbook to give his candidate some more
financial muscle.
The Newport Beach resident was one of 19 people from the city to
donate to Bush in the weeks after the Nov. 7 election, according to
Bush’s Web site.
Thirteen Costa Mesa residents also wrote checks.
“I viewed this as a way to get this over with,” Madden said. “I was
incredibly disgusted with what was going on.”
Madden said he wasn’t bothered that Gore contested the election
results, but that the Democrat had asked for recounts only in certain
counties.
The 39-year-old Madden, who hadn’t sent money during the campaign, was
one of six Newport-Mesa givers to write a check for at least $1,000.
Madden gave $2,000.
George Argyros, a Newport Beach businessman who has led the push for
an airport at the former El Toro Marine base, topped the list of donors.
Argyros joined three Newport Beach residents who contributed $5,000.
A resident of the Spyglass Hill neighborhood of Corona del Mar, Madden
co-founded Irvine-based Exult Inc. His company, which provides human
resources management services, went public in June.
For his contribution, Madden received a thank-you letter. He said he
has had “mixed reactions” about Bush’s cabinet appointments.
