Boys soccer: Eagles in scoreless deadlock

COSTA MESA - The Estancia High boys soccer team, youthful and
inexperienced, gained some confidence Wednesday, playing San Diego
powerhouse La Costa Canyon to a 0-0 nonleague tie on the Eagles field.
“We’re finally playing with some confidence,” Eagles Coach Steve
Crenshaw said of his 3-2-3 squad. “La Costa Canyon is ranked No. 3 in San
Diego County and the defending San Diego Section champion. It’s the best
team we’ve played this year.”
Backup goalie Victor Cervantes had three saves to earn the shutout,
which was aided by strong defensive work from junior sweeper Rolando
Vivar, senior stopper Alfredo Murillo and sophomore fullbacks Abdul
Kaiyum and Eli Navarette.
Crenshaw said sophomores Nikolai Doudtchenko and Javier Millan had the
best scoring chances, while Armando Ortiz and Victor Cruz were also
singled out for fine play.
The Eagles return to action Jan. 3, when they host Servite.
