Boys water polo: CdM start season with two wins

NEWPORT BEACH - Corona del Mar High opened its season with two
victories over Long Beach Poly and Servite in the South Coast boys water
polo tournament. CdM’s Garrett Bowlus scored four goals in each game.
The host Sea Kings started with a 12-2 win over Long Beach Poly.
Michael March and Artie Dorr punched in three apiece. Bobby Messenger
and Chriss Street scored one goal apiece. Goalie Sherwin Kim recorded six
saves.
March scored CdM’s first goal at the 4:39 mark of the first quarter.
The Sea Kings’ defense allowed a goal just 18 seconds later. But, Poly
did not score again until the fourth quarter with 23 seconds remaining.
In CdM’s second game, the Sea Kings overcame a 4-1 deficit to beat
Servite, 14-6.
Servite began with a 3-0 lead as CdM went scoreless in the first
quarter. But then the Sea Kings outscored Servite 6-1 in the second
quarter. March and Dorr scored two goals each in the second quarter run.
The third quarter saw a tight battle as CdM 9-6 lead going into the final
quarter -- that’s when the Sea Kings shut out Servite 5-0.
Bowlus scored four goals for CdM and so did Dorr. Kim finished the
second game with nine saves.
