Cross country: Ready for new chapter

Tony Altobelli

COSTA MESA - The year is over, the decade is over and even the

Millennium is over. For the Vanguard University men’s and women’s cross

country teams. That fresh start couldn’t have come at a fast enough.

On the women’s side, the Lions will be 11 runners deep with the top

five seasoned with experience.

Included in that mix will be senior team captain Maribel Delgado (a 5K

personal-best time of 18:59.0) and three-sport standout, junior Beth

Weidler (19:41).

Rejoining the Lions will be senior Skyler Kayser (19:40), who competed

on the 1997 fall squad.

With depth near the top, the Lions will make a sizable improvement

from last year’s eighth-place finish in the Golden State Athletic

Conference.

On the men’s side, look for senior Josh Schultz and sophomore Dan

Davis to be at or near the top of VU’s pack.

Both team captains, Schultz posted an 8K personal-best time of 27:08,

with Davis (28:33) close behind him.

Senior Steve Lalim (26:32) looks to be another top returner and

combined with freshman Shawn Johnson (27:33), depth throughout the squad

looks to be a major strength.
