Water polo: CdM, Sailors rolling

NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High’s boys 18-and-under water polo
team opened the U.S. Water Polo Junior Olympics with a pair of victories
at Villa Park High Tuesday.
In the opener, Newport defeated West Coast, 13-8. Steve Jendrusina and
Ryan Cook led Newport with five and four goals, respectively, while Joey
Snelgrove chipped in with two. Brandon McLain and Shawn Johnson each made
four saves for Newport.
In the second game, Newport topped Highland, 12-5. This time, Cook had
five goals and Jendrusina had four. Caine Littrell contributed two goals.
McLain made nine saves.
Newport plays two games today at El Toro High. Its first game is at
10:15 a.m. and the second is at 4:15 p.m.
Corona del Mar’s 18-and-under boys water polo squad also won two games
on Tuesday at Cypress. The Sea Kings crushed Lafayette Golden Bear in
their tournament opener, 14-5. John Mann led CdM with four goals while
Garrett Bowlus and Chriss Street each had three goals
In CdM’s second game, Michael March scored the game-winner with five
seconds left in the game to give the Sea Kings an 8-7 victory over
Stanford B. After CdM’s Marcello Pantuliano scored with under two minutes
left, Stanford tied the game with 28 seconds left before March won it for
the Sea Kings. Artie Dorr led CdM with three goals and Sherwin Kim made
12 saves.
CdM plays two games today at Villa Park High. Its first game is at
1:15 p.m., and the second one is at 4:15 p.m.
Newport Harbor’s girls 16-and-under team, which went 2-2 after the
first two days of the tournament, won two games on Tuesday. The Sailors
defeated North Shore, 8-4 and San Clemente, 8-5. It plays at Katella High
today in Anaheim. If successful in the 8:45 a.m. tiff, it will return for
a consolation semifinal contest at 1:15 p.m.
