COSTA MESA - Former Costa Mesa High’s boys tennis coach Joe Havens
and current Mustangs girls basketball coach Jim Weeks have been named
co-coaches of Mesa’s girls varsity tennis team, Boys Athletic Director
Kirk Bauermeister said.
They will take over for John Tichy, who stepped down as the boys and
girls coach after a two-year stint.
Havens last coached at the varsity level in 1997, when he headed the boys
program. His daughter, Hillary, figures to be the No. 1 singles player for the Mustangs next year.
Weeks previously coached Mesa’s girls varsity tennis team from 1981-89.
This is the second time he is returning to a varsity program at Mesa
after a previous stint.
He resumed control of Mesa’s girls basketball team three years ago. Weeks
also coached the softball team in 1999.
“We both like tennis, we both like coaching and we both like Mesa,” Weeks
said. “We thought it would be fun to get together and coach the girls.”
