A Costa Mesa man remained in critical condition Monday after he was hit
by a car while riding his bicycle Sunday.
Carl Leon McConnell, 49, who sustained major head injuries, is being
treated in the intensive care unit at Santa Ana’s Western Medical Center.
According to police reports, McConnell rode his bike through a stop sign
on Congress Street at 11:41 a.m. Sunday and was struck by a car driven by
Elijah Michael Justice, 19, of Costa Mesa.
Justice locked up his brakes, but the impact threw McConnell over the
car’s hood and into the windshield. Police said McConnell was not wearing
a helmet.
Justice was not injured and was not cited by police, who continue to
investigate the accident.
