Newport Harbor High’s boys and girls swim team sweeps Back Bay and Sea

View League rival Corona del Mar for the first time in 13 years. The boys

win, 93-77, as the Sailors’ Rob Williams and Jason Arrow finish 1-2 in

the 100-yard backstroke. The girls win, 90-80, as Newport’s 4x400

freestyle relay squad of Melissa Schutz, Hana Widger, Shannon Sweeney and

Rachel Arrow gets the clinching win.

Costa Mesa’s baseball team comes back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Aliso

Niguel, 8-7, to move into a tie for the Pacific Coast League lead. Jeremy

Starns hits the game-tying home run for Mesa, and Julio Vasquez drives in

Mike Adelmund for the Mustangs’ winning run.

Estancia’s Jose Cabrera throws a two-hit shutout as the Eagles’ baseball

team blanks PCL foe University, 3-0.

Corona del Mar’s Reuben Gulledge throws 6 1/3 innings as the Sea Kings

beat Irvine, 7-4, in a Sea View League matchup.

Julie Collett hits a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the

seventh inning to give Costa Mesa’s softball team an 8-7 nonleague

victory over Edison.

Newport Harbor’s boys volleyball team defeats CdM, 15-12, 11-15, 15-7, 15-12. Greg Slick leads the Tars with 24 kills, outdueling CdM’s Brian

Coleman, who had 20 kills and six blocks.

Newport’s boys track and field team ties CdM, 68-68. The Sea Kings’ Mike

Finn anchors the 4x400 winning relay team that tied the meet. Shahram

DeZahd wins the 800 and 1,600 races for Newport.

The Sailors’ girls track and field team is victorious over CdM, 76-51.

Mandy Clayton breaks Newport’s school record in the triple jump by

leaping 36-4 1/4.

CdM boys water polo alumni Chris Oeding gets a goal and an assist to help

his U.S. national team crush Brazil, 16-5, for the gold medal in the Pan

Am games.

Corona del Mar product Jeff Fryer scores 41 points as his 11th-seeded

Loyola Marymount’s men’s basketball team, inspired by the death of Hank

Gathers, shocks No. 3 Michigan, 149-115, in the NCAA Tournament.

Estancia’s Cody Rodman gives up one hit in six innings as the Eagles’

baseball team trounces Newport Harbor, 10-0, in a Sea View League

game.Estancia’s baseball team also hammers University, 8-0, behind a

two-run homer from Paul McDaniels and a two-run triple by Jeff DeSandro.

CdM’s Rees Thorkelson throws a complete-game shutout as the Sea Kings’

baseball team upsets Saddleback, 7-1, in a nonleague game.

Estancia’s boys volleyball team comes back and pulls out a 15-10, 9-15,

11-15, 15-8, 15-13 triumph over Capo Valley in a nonleague match. Rich

Romero, (34 kills) and Matt Rieden (31 kills) lead the Eagles.

CdM’s Keith Miller breaks his own school record in the pole vault with a

14-6 effort as the Sea Kings’ track and field team defeats Estancia,

98-34, in a Sea View League meet.

CdM’s girls track and field team also beats Estancia, 74-53. Jill Young

and Shana Eddy each wins two hurdles events for CdM. Estancia’s Debbie

Hargrove wins the discus with a throw of 122-7.

Newport Harbor’s Billy Thibault wins the 880-yard, mile and two-mile

races as the Sailors’ boys track and field team get a 69-66 win over

University.

CdM’s boys swim team easily moves past Estancia, 112-38. Alex Tahmoush

wins the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races for CdM.

The Sea Kings’ girls swim team gets an 111-44 win over Estancia. CdM’s

relay team of Hillary Dundas, Jill Welputt, Nora Narva and Amy Norton

wins the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Estancia’s Jenny Sheldon takes the

50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Costa Mesa’s boys swim team defeats PCL foe Trabuco Hills, 72-68, as

Darrell Kunsi wins the 50 free and 100 butterfly races for the Mustangs.
