COSTA MESA - Costa Mesa High junior Erin Bayes posted
CIF-qualifying times in winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events to
help the Mustangs earn a 96-75 nonleague girls swimming triumph over
visiting Woodbridge Wednesday.
Bayes went 25.78 in the short sprint and 57.14 in the 100.
Mesa junior Wendy Martinovich also qualified for the section
preliminaries with a victorious 1:11.30 clocking in the 100 breaststroke and twin sister Jody did the same with a winning time of 5:34.72 in the
500 free.
It was the first meet for the Mustangs, who face Huntington Beach today,
before opening Pacific Coast League competition against cross-town rival
Estancia Wednesday.
In the boys meet, Mesa senior Alex Sarris approached CIF-qualifying
standards in the two freestyle sprints. He went 23.47 in the 50 and 52.73
in the 100.
The Mustangs, who have just two varsity boys swimmers, were outpointed by
the Warriors, who have four swimmers. A final boys score was not
available, Mesa Coach Todd Kolber said, due to an incomplete scorebook.
