CORONA DEL MAR - For Corona del Mar High’s track and field coach
Bill Sumner, each meet this year is a new learning experience.
“We’re still tinkering with some things here and there,” Sumner said
following Wednesday’s dual meet win for both the boys’ and girls’ squads
over Fountain Valley. “We’re not gonna have all these events figured out
just yet. Each meet, we get closer and closer to that.”
Junior Travis Beardslee and Sean Fenton led the boys squad to a 79-57 win
over the Barons, while Liz Morse helped the girls to an 88-58 win.
“Last year we had a bunch of firsts,” Sumner said. “This year, we want to
have a bunch of firsts and seconds.”
Beardslee had a very busy day, winning the 800 (2:00.8), 1,600 (4:25.8)
and 3,200-meter runs (11:00.0), then ran third on the victorious 1,600
relay team.
“His 800 and 1,600 times were really impressive,” Sumner said. “That’s a
pretty tough double to handle and he did a great job of doing it.”
Fenton anchored the field events for CdM (2-0), winning the discus
(162-3) and the shot put (50-5).
“He’s a rock for us,” Sumner said. “Watch out for him this year in those
events. He was definitely one of our stars today.”
The key to CdM’s success was earning valuable points in the events they
were favored to win.
“We knew coming in that Fountain Valley was strong in the sprints and
field events, with the exception of Fenton’s events,” Sumner said. “We
won by taking care of the events we were supposed to be dominant in.”
On the girls’ side, Liz Morse led the Sea Kings, taking first in the 200
(25.8) and 400 (58.0), while anchoring the victorious 400 and 1,600 relay
teams.
“Another day at the office for her,” Sumner said. “The 200 and sprint
relay are new events for her. She’s so darn fast and she’s been working
hard on the faster races. She needs to work on getting out of the blocks,
but she’s so busy, she has no time.”
Jenny Cummins had a strong race in the 800, taking first by over four
seconds with a 2:23.6. She was also on both of the Sea Kings’ relay
teams.
“Overall, I’m pleased with how things are going for us,” Sumner said.
“Like I said, we’re all still learning as we go, but we’re on the right
track.”
