Boys volleyball: CdM falls

CORONA DEL MAR - Visiting Irvine High, ranked No. 4 in Orange
County, overcame a first-game loss to handle No. 3 Corona del Mar, 12-15,
15-6, 15-7, 15-2 in nonleague boys volleyball Wednesday.
CdM Coach Steve Conti was very disappointed with what he termed a lack of
intensity, effort and execution from his Sea Kings.
“It was a big match and we just didn’t show up,” Conti said. “We played
well enough to win the first game, but we weren’t playing well. I thought
we’d play better, but Irvine (4-0) settled down and started passing well.
“This was one of the most inconsistent matches we’ve played since I’ve
been here. It was frustrating because we were very quiet on the court. It
looked like we had no motivation to play tonight.”
Senior outside hitter Greg Stampley paced the Sea Kings (2-1) with 20
kills.
CdM will try to turn it around in the Orange County Championships,
beginning with pool play Friday at 3 p.m. at Marina High.
