Baseball: CdM gets lost in the fog

REDONDO BEACH - The first game of a scheduled doubleheader between

Corona del Mar High and host Redondo Union’s baseball team almost went in

the record book as a fluke loss instead of a suspended game for CdM.

On the last play of the game, Redondo Union hit a supposed game-winning

“triple” in a thick fog with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning

to take a 7-6 lead.

Redondo Union’s (3-2) Ryan Sharman hit a towering fly ball to center

field that under normal circumstances would have been a routine out.

Instead, the ball was completely engulfed by the fog and landed 30 feet

away from CdM’s center fielder, scoring a runner from third and confusing

everyone, including the umpires. But since that inning was never

completed, the game didn’t count.

“No matter how weird it is,” CdM (3-1) Coach John Emme, who spent five

years at Redondo Union before coming to the Sea Kings, said, “if they

counted it as a loss, it would have been a bummer.”

Before the odd conclusion, CdM demonstrated its scrappy style, getting

six runs on only seven singles, five of them of the infield variety.

CdM’s Alex Swanson went 2 for 3 with one RBI, one run scored and two

stolen bases. His teammate Billy Eagle also had two stolen bases. Keith

Long, Dave Knecht and J.D. Martinez all had RBI singles for the Sea

Kings. CdM pitcher Eric Snell was solid in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Emme said the option remains to play the second game at a later date, but

added it was doubtful it would happen.
