Track and Field: Pirates’ teams control the grounds

COSTA MESA - It was a clean sweep for both the Orange Coast College

men’s and women’s track and field teams in Friday’s Orange Empire

Conference matchup with Riverside and Saddleback.

The women’s team came in with 134 points, while Riverside had 124 and

Saddleback 71.

Sophomore Nicole Hansen surpassed the Pirates’ school record in the pole

vault with a mark of 10-feet-7, surpassing the old mark of 10-6, set last

year by Hanson and Michelle McCaslin.

Zoila Gomez and Lauren McDaniel each won two events for the Pirates

(8-0).

Gomez, a Costa Mesa High product, took first in the 800 meters (2:22.0)

and the 3,000 (11:09.2), while McDaniel captured the shot put (38-6 1/2)

and the javelin (120-10).

Another winner for the Pirates was Beatriz Cordova, who took the 400 in

1:09.2.

On the men’s side, OCC (7-1) prevailed with 139 points, edging

Riverside’s 136. Saddleback came in third with 73.

Juan Sanchez, out of Estancia High, was a double-winner, taking the 1,500

(4:02.4) and 3,000-yard runs (9:13.9).

Other winners were: Carl-Johan Olsson in the 110 hurdles (15.4); Chuck

Loo, from Newport Harbor, in the 400 intermediate hurdles (56.8); Troy

Becker in the pole vault (14-0); Johnnie Peeples in the long jump (21-5);

and Costa Mesa product Richard Price in the javelin (161-11).
